What Does KULA mean?
A community of the heart.
A group coming together of its own free will; an intentional community.
Kula in the Hawaiian dictionary means "field" or "open area". The Ancient Hawaiians didn't have formal schools. Young people apprenticed with their elders for their learning. When the missionaries arrived, they brought with them the concept of formal schools and the word school was "Hawaiianized" into Kula. Since there is no "S" in the Hawaiian language, the "S" was droped and the "A" sound was added to the end of the word. Kula is also a Sanskrit word with several meanings. The meaning that we feel represents our Kula the best is a community of the heart.

Instructional Philosophy
Our goal at Kula is to provide an environment which allows each individual to flourish and develop in their own unique way as they prepare for higher educational achievement. Kula acknowledges that the intention of education is to cultivate an openness of mind, which creates new connections and heightens our awareness of self and others.
The outstanding faculty of Kula provide a spirited curriculum which incorporates academic, artistic, social, and athletic programs. Teachers include activities that contain high-level thinking skills, inductive and deductive reasoning, logical thinking, recitation performance, brainstorming techniques, creative expression, and public speaking experience. Teachers introduce students to various perspectives which guide them in establishing links between their own innate intelligence and the world in which they live. Subject matter is presented in a manner which encourages questions that motivate further exploration.
Kula's class size is limited allowing each student to receive individual attention and instruction tailored to his/her own interests, needs, and learning style. Kula emphasizes experiences which enable students to become capable, responsible citizens in a global community. Students are involved in independent study, cooperative learning activities, peer tutoring, community service and mentoring programs. We believe that these experiences allow students to take responsibility in developing their own learning and leadership skills. Kula recognizes the importance of an environment that fosters support and respect among individuals. Students benefit from a safe physical emotional environment where behavioral limits are clearly stated and consequences are consistently applied.
